After a rainy start to the day the sun made an appearance for just long enough that it caused some afternoon storms. Hail and lightning accompanied these storms today along with several severe thunderstorm warnings.
A picture of today's hail sent to me by my father, Doug Smith, from Barren County. |
The current weather is drastically different from what it was this time last week. Last week a ridge of high pressure dominated this area so we saw clear skies which meant cool mornings and warm afternoons. After the cold front that came through over the weekend skies have been cloudier and temperatures have been much cooler. Besides the more characteristic fall like weather that the front brought to the region it has also brought some rain to the area below are today's totals which as of about 5:30 pm show that most of the area got about a quarter inch of rain with some areas maybe getting half an inch or more since 7:00 am.
This graphic shows the rainfall across Kentucky since 7 am. |
The next few days look to be a continuation of the current pattern with more rain probable for tonight and tomorrow, and highs in the low to mid 70s. This is typical for this time of year as ridges of high pressure rise up over the area bring nice warm weather that then get pushed out of the way by cold fronts that bring colder nastier weather. Endure the gloomy skies for now because it is likely that it won't be this way long as Summer and Winter battle for control of the skies during the fall season.
Forecast:
Tonight- Look for more showers to pop up tonight with an overnight low of 58°.
Tomorrow- A high of 73° and a 60% chance of rain.
Tomorrow Night- A low of 53° and slight possibility for precipitation.
