Cold Set to Continue

Did you happen to stick your head outside the door this evening? There were a few flakes falling in Bowling Green earlier today. Apparently this strong high pressure regime wasn't enough to prevent a little moisture from freezing and falling from the sky. It was certainly cold enough for snowflakes today. We are 20-30 degrees below normal for this time of year, with the high today only making it into the mid 30s. Winds have not shifted out of the northwest position since the strong cold front passed a couple days ago. Naturally, this is the arctic air we had been advertising for some time. With winds sustained at 10 mph at times, the wind chill was as low as the mid 20s during daylight hours.

Winds are spiraling around a hefty high pressure system over Nebraska

This is truly a case of high pressure domination. The high is massive and powerful as well. Centered east of Wyoming, it's extended its reach to about the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. It is no longer at 1048 millibars, but even after weakening, the high is 1033 mb at the center, which is still very strong. It will slowly progress into the Midwest, and should eliminate much of the cloud cover tomorrow. Recall, though, that this is the system carrying all the cold Canadian air. Expect temperatures to be similar to today; a frigid morning with the afternoon staying in the 30s. The teens are not out of the question for Friday night into tomorrow morning.

You've probably heard talks of snowfall swirling around on television and social media for the weekend and Monday. I won't detail much regarding the snow forecast, mainly because we're still a few days away, and as such, there are too many variables to be ironed out before a satisfactory degree of confidence can be obtained. At this time, it is too early to declare things like snow totals or timing. Use discretion if you see predictions like these at this stage. In the coming 24 to 48 hours, we will have a better handle on this potentially snowy setup. As always, you can stay tuned to the WKU Storm Team for the latest information.

Tonight: Partly cloudy with a low around 22°. Winds from the northwest at 5 mph.
Friday: Mostly sunny with a high of 37°. North winds increasing to 5-10 mph.
Friday night: Light winds and mostly clear skies. Low near 20°.

Have a good night!
