A Glimpse of Some Sun

Sunshine has been hard to come by this month, especially in the past week or so. A climate report recently issued by NOAA stated that all locations in the continental United States, except for Florida, were above average in temperatures for the first half of December. While those warmer temps were somewhat noticeable here, the lack of sunshine has been deceiving. Tonight, just a few flakes continue to fall here and there across our DMA. We certainly won't be seeing any sleet falling like last night, which fortunately amounted to very little.

There have been whispers among some of the media of chances for a White Christmas, but the holiday is still a week away, so anything would be speculation at this point. Eyes are on the possibility of a cyclone (just another way of saying "low pressure system") lifting out of the Gulf states and rapidly developing. It bears monitoring, but little can be said beyond that right now.

Wind currents over the eastern US are fairly calm tonight (from hint.fm/wind)

In the meantime, we're in store for a mostly cloudy and cold night with lows below freezing. Tomorrow will paint a slightly better picture however, Sunshine will finally play a starring role. High pressure is sliding out of the Upper Plains and will settle comfortably over our area tomorrow. Winds should be fairly light and highs will be in the lower 40s. Friday night, clouds will creep in once again from the south as a low advances off the Gulf of Mexico. Much of the South will see rain from this, but temperatures may be cool enough here to churn out some snowflakes. Not to worry though; rich moisture will have difficulty making it to south-central Kentucky, so if any sleet or flakes fall, it shouldn't amount to much more than what we saw last night. We may actually stay dry through Saturday if the high pressure refuses to budge. The precip will be a quick mover, making way for more sun over the weekend.

Tonight: A low near 27° with mostly overcast skies and light winds from the north.
Friday: Partly sunny with a high of 42° and northeast winds at 5 mph.
Friday night: A 30% chance of rain with perhaps some flurries. Low around 32° with light northeast winds under mostly cloudy skies.
