That thick and soupy feel to the atmosphere is just one of the many ingredients playing a part in the threat for severe weather this afternoon and evening. Hold that thought. First, let's set things up where they are now.
We already know it's pretty juicy in the grand outdoors, but it's warm as well. As of 10:00 this morning, temperatures are in the mid, and approaching upper, 70s around here. This is as we head towards highs in the mid 80s under a strong southwest wind. You'll feel it, especially with gusts as high as 30mph possible.
This southern flow is also aiding in pumping in gulf moisture. Already, dew points are in the upper 60s, headed for the low 70s, which means the humidity you feel is only going to get worse as the day progresses.
Add the heat, humidity, and quite a few other ingredients to the mix, you get the chance for scattered thunderstorm development today, and that shows up nicely on the HRRR.

HRRR shows scattered storm development this afternoon ahead of squall line from cold front later tonight. |
Most of that should remain localized, but it'll be something to pay close attention to. By tonight, the attention turns to a cold front approaching from the west, and that's where our main severe weather threat comes from.
The storm prediction center has the region under an Enhanced Risk for severe weather, with the main threats being damaging winds and potentially large hail. However, an isolated weak tornado can't be ruled out of the mix.

Much of the region outlined by the SPC for an ENHANCED RISK of severe weather. |
Outside of any storms today. The skies should be mixed with sun and clouds, along with those highs in the mid 80s I mentioned earlier.
Take time to be weather aware today. Don't be afraid, but be confident in a severe weather plan that protects you and your loved ones, just in case. After all, better safe than sorry, right?
