Sunshine Returns

I don’t know about you, but I’m glad the past few days are behind us. Gloomy, cloudy skies and highs in the 60s just doesn’t sit well with me. Upper-level patterns are finally shifting in our favor. Cutoff lows tend to move pretty slowly, and it took a while for it to progress over the Appalachians. Now that it’s gone, most of the clouds have gone with it. This means a few things. First of all, the sun is back! It didn’t show up until yesterday afternoon (which actually managed to salvage the day), but this was the first morning in a few days with the sun being present. It made for a nice sunrise too.

Secondly, more sun and less clouds means getting back to warmer temperatures. This morning was cooler than the last few because of fewer clouds. Regardless, we’ll be back to the 80s this afternoon. 83° will be the high in Bowling Green, with the rest of the region in the low to mid-80s. These are normal temperatures for south-central Kentucky during this time of year. It’s also fairly normal to have humid air around, but we won’t have to worry about that. Today will be dry and partly sunny, so find a way to enjoy it!

Temperature anomaly today from the GFS shows south-central Kentucky in white and light yellow, meaning we're right on target with normal temperatures

Tonight will also be warmer than as of late, with lows around 61°. Skies will be mostly clear with calm winds. A few more clouds return for tomorrow though; probably greater coverage than today. Still, it looks to be partly cloudy and a little warmer with highs near 85°. Most of the day should remain rain-free, but a cold front will be diving out of the north towards us that afternoon and evening. There is still some variability regarding timing, but I think the best chance for showers and thundershowers will be in the early morning hours of Saturday. Rain won’t be too widespread, and right now it looks like the best chances will be west of our region.

Sunday should be a brief break from the precipitation before another front approaches us early next week. Whereas previous model runs had this feature coming through on Sunday, now it seems that the arrival will be delayed until Monday or Tuesday. This will also be the warmest portion of the forecast, with highs in the mid to upper-80s. We've escaped the humid weather for now, but the stickiness will return on Sunday.

Today: Partly Sunny with a high of 83° and light variable winds.
Tonight: Mostly clear and warmer than the last few nights with a low of 61°.
Friday: Partly Cloudy with a 20% chance of showers that evening.
