If you woke up this morning hoping today might finally feel like September again . . . well you’re probably not alone, but unfortunately you’ll have to wait. Lows this morning were in the mid to upper-60s but there was less fog than yesterday, so at least there’s a positive. I was surprised to learn that the official high in Bowling Green yesterday was 94°. Walking to and from class on Wednesday didn’t strike me as too hot, but that may have been due to respectable humidity levels. Today, the moisture has definitely ramped up, making things feel a bit hotter.
Anytime the dewpoint is at 65° or above, the air feels humid. Raise that number to 70°, and it begins to get muggy. Dewpoints into tonight will be wrestling with the 70° mark, which doesn’t bode well for those who will be outdoors on this Thursday. At least we’re not dealing with weather like we had on this date in 2011, when the actual temperature, not the heat index, was 101°. We transition to mostly sunny skies tomorrow, and the dry spell will add another day as well. It’s difficult to get precipitation going when high pressure is so dominant. Many of us could use the rain, but right now we’re out of luck. A couple pop-up showers were noted across our southern Kentucky counties this afternoon, but we could use a good, soaking rain.
Highs the rest of this week will remain in the 90s, with Sunday being the final day. This would make six days in a row with such heat. There is still the slight chance of a few showers on Sunday, but that is really the only day this next week with any meaningful possibility of rain. Humidity will last into next week, but by then highs will be in the upper-80s (still above normal, by the way). Autumn is only 20 days away but Mother Nature is going to have to make some changes quick if the weather is going to be ready for it. There may be a little light at the end of the tunnel. Some models put a cold front through our region a week from today. This could potentially mean three things: rain, cooler temperatures and less humidity. We'll wait and see. In the meantime, be sure to cheer on your Hilltoppers as they take on Vanderbilt tonight! Let's bring a victory home.
Tonight: Partly Cloudy, humid. Lows near 70°.
Friday: Mostly Sunny, highs around 93°. Northeast winds at 5 mph.
